2010 Class List

(Please bear in mind that students are assigned to a certain level (group) based on their placement test results, and not all classes are available for all levels. The classes that are available for certain levels only have the level indicated next to the class name.)

Music and English (Teresa Verhoog):

The new version (not the same as last year’s) will have more Canadian songs and artists, with a mixture of activities to build your English speaking, writing, reading and listening skills. We will focus on vocabulary, slang, and how to avoid common mistakes made by students of English.

Amazing People Throughout History (Levels A & B) (Clay Bergen):

This course will be an opportunity to look at several individuals throughout history that have made a difference in the world and what makes them "great". People such as Canadian Rick Hansen, Wayne Gretzky and others as well as world figures such as Mother Theresa and Gandhi will be examined. The idea is to read about these individuals, to write about what the students think is important about what they have done, and to discuss their ideas and hear others as well.

Survey of Canadian Literature (Levels B through D) (Clay Bergen):

This course will be a survey of some of Canada's finest and most well know authors in short story and poem form. Through reading the literature, studying some background material and discussing the content and purpose of the material it is hoped students can add to their knowledge of Canadian literature and improve their English speaking and writing skills.

Figures of Speech and Parables (Daryl Porter):

This class will examine many of the main figures of speech that are used in everyday Canadian life. By learning these figures your language skills, both oral and written, will be enhanced. This will not be a class on the technicalities of the difference between various kinds of figures but rather a practical look at word pictures that make any language full and colourful.

Informal English Conversation (Stacy Unger):

Come for some English conversation about hobbies and skills and what you like to do. We may end up discussing food, as that's always a good conversation starter as well as some interactive English games and role plays.

Cooperative Discipline (Levels C & D) (Esther Lang):

This topic will be of interest to both teachers and parents.  It will explore reasons for misbehaviour and ways in which to help children behave more positively.   Students will create and perform short plays to model the ideas they have learned.

Life Values (Esther Lang):

We all need to be reminded of consistently applying a moral standard in our lives.   These sessions will deal with defining certain virtues (such as compassion, flexibility), why we practice them, how we practice them, and what the signs are of their success in our lives.  Students will listen, discuss the information, and plan short plays modelling these behaviours to practice their English.

Canadian Culture (Level C/D) (Ron McLeod):

What does it mean to be a Canadian from a Canadian's point of view?  Discussion around peculiar Canadian habits.

Teaching Strategies (Level D) (Ron McLeod):

Comparison of European and Canadian education systems, and a discussion of strategies and techniques to improve success for a variety of learning styles.  Diagnostic tools to compare teaching and learning styles will also be utilized.

...and a couple more to come later.
